Zante, or Zakynthos if you prefer, is the third largest island in the Ionian cluster. According to legend, this
island derives its name from the son of Dardanos, the King of Troy. The beauty of Zante is unsurpassed, with its emerald green sea and mountains abundant with pines. The hospitality of Zante island natives is also unsurpassed, as is their music. It is popular with families because of the number of sandy beaches which slope gently into the sea making them safe for small children. Other beaches in Zante, with rougher seas, are popular with surfers and water sportsmen. The nightlife in Zante caters for all tastes. There are the tavernas along almost every beach where you can sample a variety of good wholesome local food while sipping wine on the water front. Particularly in Laganas the vibrant nightlife continues until the small hours of the morning.
There is one airport located on Zante, which connects flights with other airports in Greece and Europe. Just southwest of here, you will find the National Marine Park of Zante, where loggerhead turtles are protected in the Bay of Kalamaki. Loggerhead turtles, or Caretta Caretta, are an endangered species.
